Product Description
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful large fossil lower tusk of an Ice Age wild boar, Sus scrofa. It was found by dredge, with many other Ice Age fossils such as rhino, Megaloceros, mammoth and reindeer, during a construction operation alongside the Maas River of the Netherlands, many years ago. The tusk is complete and in stunning preservation having been retrieved from deep within a clay and gravel Pleistocene layer.
The wild boar was a dangerous and formidable game animal, hunted by prehistoric humans in the last Ice Age. Images of the boar have been found on some of the earliest prehistoric art and cave paintings in Europe. The wild boar is a large and extremely ferocious beast that still survives today. They have a saying in the Balkans that "you take a hunter with you when you want to kill a deer but, you take a priest with you when you want to kill a boar".
