This SUPER RARE Saharan Acheulian handaxe was made and used by Homo ergaster (African Homo erectus). It was surface-collected from an exposed Acheulian site in the Northern Sahara Desert of North Africa. This Lower Paleolithic tool represents the first intelligent design type known to science that was made by primitive humans. Prior to these Saharan Acheulian tools, only crude pebble tools existed in the human fossil record.
First the negative - this axe has a single hairline break and repair running across body, just below the mid-line on the lower half. The only reason we are offering it here is it was part of a spectacular German private museum and was THE FINEST hand axe in that collection, even with the break. The flaking, form, workmanship, thinness and color is unrivaled in anything you will ever see outside this offering, that can be purchased. If it was not for the break, this axe would be more than 20 times the price! The original collection label is still on the proximal end. The tip is not a recent break and many of the finest made African Acheulian axes we have seen have a tip like this dating to their original prehistoric origin. The end of the tip is identical in color and patina ruling out any modern damage. If you wish to pride yourself with one of the finest Lower Paleolithic hand axes of Africa without taking out a second mortgage, this is the only chance you will probably ever have in acquiring an AUTHENTIC example of this caliber. Specimens like this are one in many, many thousands and are exceptionally rare. Collectors consider prized features to include either workmanship or color but when BOTH exist, then it is truly an important piece to include in a collection as this one is. The vast majority of quartzite tools from this culture and geographical region are made of a homogenous color quartzite.
GENUINE Acheulian hand axes of this quality are rare and recent realized prices at major auction houses are proving what we have been saying for years that authentic high grade tools of primitive man remain one of the most promising investments.
