This Saharan Acheulean PICK handaxe was made and used by Homo ergaster (African Homo erectus).  It was surface-collected from an exposed Acheulian site in South Central Sahara Desert of Africa.  This Lower Paleolithic tool represents the first intelligent design type known to science that was made by primitive humans.  Prior to these Saharan Acheulean tools, only crude pebble tools existed in the human fossil record.

This is rare offering in both lithic type and location.  The Tenere region of the Sahara is not heavily collected compared to the Northern and Western Sahara sites.  Rarely do you see fine grade Paleolithic artifacts from this part of the Sahara.  The lithics of the region are unique in some cases with beautiful green jasper, light cream, banded sandstones and red and cream colored quartzite.  Even for this region, this stunning hand axe is an unusual discovery for it color.  Such a narrow tipped PICK HAND AXE is also not as common as the amygdaloid examples which are more typical.  The prehistoric human maker of this axe most certainly oriented the blood red portion of the stone to be the tip which demonstrates a primitive human awareness of "art" and aesthetics.  The lithic is an unusual red and white quartzite with unusual parallel banding as seen in the handle area of this axe.  This is truly a gorgeous authentic artifact of early humans from Africa.  Original tip is still intact and unbroken.   The very heavy wind gloss and patina is a testament to its age and extreme long-term exposure to the desert environment.  This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a lesser common typology handaxe, being a pick, and from an uncommon region for this period.  The added bonus is its incredible colors and patterns in the stone.

In "as found" ORIGINAL condition with NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.  Tip is not broken from recent damage or mishandling and is in perfect original form.
