GOLD
HEADED PHACOPS TRILOBITE
Hamar
Laghdad Formation - Erfoud, Morocco
DEVONIAN
PERIOD: 395 - 345 million years ago
The
Phacops speculator species is a classic Devonian Era trilobite from the
Atlas formation. The prominent pustulose surface on the glabella
and the wonderful compound eyes are features one can never tire of
admiring. Compared to the common all black examples, this very
unique Phacops has a golden orange snout and region just behind the head
caused by trace minerals in the rock as the fossil formed hundreds of
millions of years ago. This feature really sets this trilobite
apart from the ordinary types. The state of overall preservation is spectacular.
Eye lens detail is
intact on right eye and partially present on left eye. Entire
surface of creature is well preserved with fine detail. Most
impressive for display, the original limestone rock this trilobite is on
has been prepared to be a curved thin slab following the articulation of
the creature itself as seen in the second photo. This alone makes
this one of the most beautiful and unique Phacops for display we have
seen. A top grade example of this species.
This
entire trilobite and the surrounding rock surfaces have been carefully
lab-prepped with high-tech micro-abrasive equipment to fully expose
every bit of tiny detail. The
end result was worth the extra expense / labor and has produced this
wonderful fine quality fossil.
