PARADOXIDES
TRILOBITE - Anti-Atlas Mountain Range, South Morocco
CAMBRIAN
PERIOD: 543 - 510 million years ago
This is a
massive specimen Paradoxides trilobite. The relief across the
entire creature is a dramatic, "roller coaster" wavy
thickness as the trilobite was buried in a turbulent mud. There is
very good inflation and both the lobes and cephalon (head) are very full
compared to most examples of this fascinating and largest of trilobites.
This
spectacular example was part of a very rare find several years
ago. A seam was discovered that produced the some of the finest
Paradoxides specimens ever seen. We were extremely fortunate to
secure the entire find and this prize fossil was amongst that
group. It is most probable that we will never come across such a
discovery like this again so we strongly urge anyone wanting a choice
grade version of Paradoxides from the Sahara to act on this one!
A
majority of the original limestone matrix remains and there is only
about 12 - 15% restoration overall, limited mainly to the free cheeks
and right genal spine. The left genal spine is original as is much
of the fringe of the pleural lobes - very rare!
