DROTOPS MEGALOMANICUS TRILOBITE - Atlas Mountains, Morocco DEVONIAN PERIOD: 395 - 345 million years ago Quite substantial in size, these large, fine grade Drotops trilobite specimens are a fantastic display fossil! Commonly labeled as Phacops africanus, the correct scientific name is Drotops megalomanicus. Since most trilobites are less than a couple of inches in length, these are monsters and perfect for show. These are the largest genuine Devonian trilobites in the world that have this kind of high relief and fascinating detail as seen in the photos above. The last two photos of this remarkable beauty say it all. BOTH eyes are shown and display the one feature that all trilobite collectors first look at - the EYES! Because this genus of trilobite is so large, the multi-lens detail in the eyes is so easy to see when present. Unfortunately, the eyes are usually damaged upon excavation. This is a superb example with both eyes displaying clearly, the wonderful and fascinating lens detail that makes trilobites such interesting creatures. This specimen is also in a partially enrolled 'death pose'. It is believed that like pill bugs, trilobites curled up when threatened or just prior to death. It appears as if the creature is crawling over the rock in this pose. The photos above do not do this specimen justice as it is much nicer in person than appears in the images. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Similar to all trilobites found in the world, the only way these are located is to break the trilobite-bearing rock therefore, repair and some restoration to the break is unavoidable. These specimens are excavated from the Devonian deposits of the Atlas Mountain range, located southwest of Erfoud in the pre-Sahara region of Morocco.
