MEGALODON
TOOTH - Peruvian
Desert,
South America
MIOCENE
to PLIOCENE PERIOD: 23.3 - 1.81 million years ago
There are many different
features of this tooth that are each very rare. The fact that so
many of these rare aspects are attributed to the same Megalodon tooth
are so rare that this specimen is an ideal candidate for a true
investment fossil.
Megalodon teeth from
the Peruvian desert are rare to find intact.
They are found on dry land in a harsh desert environment and often
exposed to the elements. Because
they are found on land and not in water, they possess much brighter and
cleaner colors but unfortunately, like most land deposits for these
teeth, Megalodon teeth from the Peruvian desert do not possess the dense
mineralization common to Megalodon teeth found in rivers. Teeth
from the desert are almost always heavily
weathered and broken or seriously fractured in the enamel. The few
that are make it to the market are usually restored or so poor in
quality they are not worth mention. With this knowledge, the
images above will start to impact you just how rare this magnificent tooth really is!
This is one of the
prettiest Meg teeth we have seen and its colors and condition are a
combination of the finest qualities of the two major land sources
(phosphate mines) in the U.S.. It doesn't get any better than
this! To be a tooth found in a desert is hard to fathom when you
take in such pristine condition this specimen is. The
serrations are AS NEW and DO NOT EVEN SHOW ANY SIGNS OF WEAR!
There is only ONE single serration missing and it is at the very tip -
this is UNHEARD OF in teeth this size from ANYWHERE!!! Enamel is a
surreal combination with the display side made up of cream, cinnamon
brown, gold, orange, blue, gray and black. The reverse looks like
a different tooth with colors of plum, gray, blue and walnut
brown. Every feature of this tooth is a
GRADE 10 and we absolutely guarantee there is NO RESTORATION OR
REPAIR! Root has only been treated
with a chemical hardener to stabilize and protect against any
damage. Bourlette is 100% intact and an awesome blend of
color! We cannot say enough about this tooth. Its price is a
bargain for such rarity and value appreciation potential.
At a length of 52 feet
and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second
largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the
sperm whale. Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.
Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5
feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12
feet high. If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim
over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a
torso in excess of 10 feet thick! The jaws were so large that
this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole. A
predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine
vertebrates, especially whales. Fossil teeth have been found in
excess of 7 inches in length! Megalodon teeth are similar in
geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately
divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to
the modern white shark. It is also not fully understood why this
giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is. A day at
the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!
