MEGALODON
TOOTH WITH PATHOLOGY -
Undisclosed River, South Carolina, U.S.A.
MIOCENE
to PLIOCENE PERIOD: 23.3 - 1.81 million years ago
If the
images of the above tooth have hypnotized you with their beauty, then
you will be even more impressed to hold this wonder in your hand and see
it in person. This supreme Megalodon tooth has so many unique and
gorgeous features, it is hard to know where to begin in its
description! First let us qualify that
this tooth is completely natural with no repair or restoration.
The diver will not disclose where it was found to protect the site for
himself as is usually the case in rare river teeth. The serrations
run all the way from each root lobe right to the super-fine tip.
The tip is INTACT with all its serrations. This is all very rare!
The
enamel is very hard to describe. It is extremely chatoyant, to the
point of having a METALLIC appearance. All the enamel is thick and
very glossy and possesses a VERY
RARE deep, dark bronze color
with metallic
platinum highlights
just above the bourlette on the display side. Very seldom have we
ever encountered a tooth with these features and color!
The
pathology of this tooth is very rare and unique, as well. It is so
robust and shaped in such a curved, surreal manner that it looks
evil! This tooth appears as if it could punch right through heavy
plate armor. It is of an uncommon thickness in the center with a
pronounced hump on the reverse side running right down the middle of the
tooth. There is a graceful curvature visible in the side angle
photos above. All this adds up to a tooth that is the strongest
construction specimen we have seen and most definitely was able to
sustain incredible brute force inflicted on it when the giant killer was
feeding. Teeth
with pathological features are extremely
rare
and highly sought after by advanced collectors, scientists and museums,
usually carrying a premium in the price to reflect this.
All these
premium and rare traits make for a phenomenal PRIZE Megalodon tooth
specimen and is sure to be one of the crown jewels in any
collection. This tooth carries our strongest recommendation!
At a length of 52 feet
and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second
largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the
sperm whale. Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.
Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5
feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12
feet high. If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim
over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a
torso in excess of 10 feet thick! The jaws were so large that
this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole. A
predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine
vertebrates, especially whales. Fossil teeth have been found in
excess of 7 inches in length! Megalodon teeth are similar in
geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately
divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to
the modern white shark. It is also not fully understood why this
giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is. A day at
the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!
