5 INCH CHATOYANT SHIMMERING BRONZE MEGALODON TOOTH
St. Mary's River - Georgia, U.S.A.
MIOCENE
to PLIOCENE PERIOD: 23.3 - 1.81 million years ago
The
massive Megalodon shark is one of the largest and most fearsome
predators that ever existed in the ancient seas. Owning a genuine,
fine quality tooth from these terrible creatures of prehistory is the
pride of many collectors. This fine quality tooth came from the
famous shark known scientifically as
Carcharocles megalodon
- the largest and deadliest
shark that ever lived!
Megalodon
teeth with this enamel chatoyancy and color are very rare and
from very few sites in the U.S.A.. Those sites are closely guarded and kept secret by the divers that know
them. One of the most famous rare sites for producing Megalodon
teeth with stunning color and patterns in the enamel is the St. Mary's
River in Georgia, U.S.A..
It is a tooth like this that
put the St. Mary's River on the Megalodon tooth Map! Collectors
that are familiar with the unique set of circumstances regarding this
famous deposit will appreciate just exactly what is being offered here.
The iron based minerals in the substrate are responsible for a rare
occurrence of dark rich reddish, bronze and brown Megalodon teeth
sometimes with metallic-like chatoyancy. Oddly
enough, some of these teeth develop large open spot patterns in the
enamel and it is this feature along with the rich red/brown tones that
really drives the passion for these highly unusual and rare specimens.
Right
at the FIVE INCH magic mark for Megalodon teeth. Anyone that collects Megalodon
teeth knows that prices ramp up dramatically for teeth at this size mark
similar to the popularity of "1 carat" when it comes to diamonds.
This beautiful lustrous specimen must be seen in person to fully
appreciate its unique enamel. The
enamel has incredible luster and chatoyancy with an overall hue of dark
metallic golden bronze. This highly reflective feature is only
apparent in person and will not photograph as impressive as the tooth is
in person so the tooth is more
impressive than in the photos. The root on this beauty is complete
with both intact lobes of very thick proportions. Serration and
tip are well preserved and far exceed the quality usually found in this
size tooth. The back side enamel is different from the front and
shows a dark black undertone with pyrite spots and rings over its entire
surface - a truly surreal effect! Of the few large Megalodon teeth
we have had with this rare effect, this one is the nicest so far.
Most importantly, WE GUARANTEE NO
RESTORATION AND NO REPAIR of any kind to this specimen.
Megalodon
teeth found in rivers are almost always heavily eroded and worn from the
high energy environment in which they were subjected to. They
usually have dull, sand-blasted enamel, peeling back from the
core. The roots are often damaged and the color is almost always
BLACK - the most common color for river teeth in South
Carolina. This
tooth is amongst the finer grade Megalodon teeth offered on the market.
While we strictly avoid teeth with restoration, Caveat emptor with some
dealers' inventories as Megalodon teeth in the larger sizes are
increasingly being subjected to SOME
repair or restoration. Unlike all other types of fossils,
ANY
repair or restoration to Megalodon teeth
DRAMATICALLY LOWERS THE
VALUE!
At a length of 52 feet
and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second
largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the
sperm whale. Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.
Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5
feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12
feet high. If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim
over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a
torso in excess of 10 feet thick! The jaws were so large that
this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole. A
predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine
vertebrates, especially whales. Fossil teeth have been found in
excess of 7 inches in length! Megalodon teeth are similar in
geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately
divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to
the modern white shark. It is also not fully understood why this
giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is. A day at
the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!
