GRADE 10 SPOTTED RED-BROWN 4.45" MEGALODON SHARK TOOTH

St. Mary's River, Georgia, U.S.A.

MIOCENE to PLIOCENE PERIOD:  23.3 - 1.81 million years ago

Without a doubt, this is one super-stunning example of just how beautiful and rare a fossil Megalodon tooth can be.  In every way, this tooth is a 10 and can boast of several features that even go beyond that.  It is a tooth like this that put this very small section on the St. Mary's River on the Megalodon Map!!!  Collectors that are familiar with the unique set of circumstances regarding this famous deposit will appreciate just exactly what is being offered here.  The iron based minerals in the substrate are responsible for a rare occurrence of dark rich reddish brown Megalodon teeth.  Oddly enough, some of these teeth develop large open spot patterns in the enamel and it is this feature that really drives the passion for these highly unusual and rare specimens.

Every feature that this deposit is famous for can be found in this remarkable beauty.  The color is so rich and deep with the classic spot pattern in the dense enamel.  Bourlette, enamel and root are all present and in the finest grade.  This is easily a GRADE 10 tooth and exceeds that in the added features and rare provenance.   The reddish brown enamel is complete and intact with a natural lustrous surface and no peel on either side.  The serrations are crisp and run all the way down both sides with just the slightest wear and a small area on one edge with feeding wear.  We cannot recommend this example enough.  Megalodon teeth like this are sure-fire investments as there simply is not enough of teeth like this quality and beauty to satisfy the ever-increasing numbers of discriminating collectors.  This specimen has absolutely NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION Definitely, a tooth of a caliber rarely seen today with unique and highly aesthetic features.

Megalodon teeth found in rivers are almost always heavily eroded and worn from the high energy environment in which they were subjected to.  They usually have dull, sand-blasted enamel, peeling back from the core.  The roots are often damaged and the color is almost always the boring, common black.  This tooth is amongst THE FINEST Megalodon teeth with unique features, in addition.  While we strictly avoid teeth with restoration, Caveat emptor with some dealers' inventories as Megalodon teeth in the larger sizes are increasingly being subjected to SOME repair or restoration.  Unlike all other types of fossils, ANY repair or restoration to Megalodon teeth DRAMATICALLY LOWER THE VALUE!

At a length of 52 feet and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the sperm whale.  Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.  Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5 feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12 feet high.  If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a torso in excess of 10 feet thick!  The jaws were so large that this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole.  A predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine vertebrates, especially whales.  Fossil teeth have been found in excess of 7 inches in length!  Megalodon teeth are similar in geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to the modern white shark.  It is also not fully understood why this giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is.  A day at the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS WITH ALL THE DESIRABLE FEATURES THAT THIS SITE IS KNOWN FOR - RARE!
