AURICULATUS (EXTINCT GREAT WHITE SHARK) TOOTH
Undisclosed
River, South Carolina, U.S.A.
MID EOCENE PERIOD:
50 - 42 million years ago
This species of shark
is the first in the lineage of extinct Great White Sharks and is
considered the beginning of the direct lineage of the giant C.
megalodon. As the Great-Grandfather of Megalodon, this shark shows
features of its teeth that later Meg dropped, namely, the pronounced
cusplets flanking the crown. Fine grade teeth are very rare for
this shark species and actually, far less abundant than Megalodon.
Of the few nice
auriculatus teeth we have seen, this one is clearly in a class all its
own. It is the first auriculatus tooth we have offered on the site
simply because we strive to offer only the finest and rare material and
this is the first one we have located that was worth mention.
Well, it is definitely worth mention! The condition is about as
perfect as ANY tooth could be. The tip is needle-sharp and fully
serrated. The cusplets have NO damage or wear. The root is
full and intact and .... how about that color? The color is what
makes this tooth especially rare. The size on this specimen is not
very large but the locale and color in which it was found IS.
There is a bizarre and hypnotic combination of blood red/orange and
bright lime green. The images best show this gem. The area
where these teeth are found is so guarded and these teeth are so rare
that the diver that found it has remained anonymous in its provenance
other than a river in South Carolina. Its immaculate condition
indicates it was found buried in the sediments of the river bottom as it
shows NO sign or wear or damage as most river teeth do. NO
RESTORATION OR REPAIR. VERY highly recommended for the collector
of the finest shark teeth one can find.
