HUGE
ISURUS
HASTALIS TOOTH
- Ashepoo River,
South Carolina, U.S.A.
LOWER
MIOCENE PERIOD: 23 million years ago
This giant and
spectacular fossil tooth is of the extinct Mako shark called Isurus
hastalis. This prehistoric shark is a member of the White Shark
family. Teeth from Isurus hastalis look remarkably similar to the
modern Great White Shark less the serrations. Little is known
about this species and it is classified in the genus Isurus (Mako) due
to its characteristic smooth edges. Some consider this shark the
"Grandfather of the Great White".
Just in from recent
dives, this massive Isurus tooth was quite a find. Specimen
is intact with beautiful plum and silver chatoyant enamel with a
stunning subtle tiger stripe pattern. Anyone that collects teeth
from this shark can attest that specimens over 2.5 inches are rare and
highly desired. Specimens that approach 2.75 inches are true
prizes and here this one is 2.7 inches!!! A tooth this size is
seldom ever seen and rarely offered. This is one of only three
that we collected from several recent trips. There is NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION, tooth is completely natural and
genuine with no enhancement. Gorgeous and rare color and pattern
makes up for some features due from prolonged exposure in open water
which actually was the cause for this color. Very dreamy, surreal
appearance.
In most cases,
exceptionally large and rare teeth are in less than desirable condition
but it is their sheer size that makes them in demand. Here is a
tooth that puts most teeth to shame even in sizes much smaller than it
is. Do not miss this one!
