HUGE
ISURUS
HASTALIS TOOTH WITH PATHOLOGY
- Beaufort,
South Carolina, U.S.A.
LOWER
MIOCENE PERIOD: 23 million years ago
This giant and
spectacular fossil tooth is of the extinct Mako shark called Isurus
hastalis. This prehistoric shark is a member of the White Shark
family. Teeth from Isurus hastalis look remarkably similar to the
modern Great White Shark less the serrations. Little is known
about this species and it is classified in the genus Isurus (Mako) due
to its characteristic smooth edges. Some consider this shark the
"Grandfather of the Great White".
This is one of the
most beautiful and unique very large Mako teeth we have had in recent
memory. To begin with, it features slight pathological deformation
with it's twisted crown. The enamel is a gorgeous platinum mint
green and blue with a very cool pattern to the colors as seen
above. The size is impressive enough but preservation for a tooth
this size is what makes this a choice and highly desirable
example. Unlike large river teeth, the root on this gem is
extremely well mineralized and features a prominent nutrient hole in the
middle and no open expansion cracks as is usually the case. Anyone that collects
teeth from this shark can attest that specimens over 2.5 inches are rare
and highly desired. Specimens that EXCEED 2.5 inches are true
prizes and here this one is 2.7 inches in a quality that would make any
tooth proud!!! There is NO REPAIR AND NO
RESTORATION, tooth is completely natural and
genuine with no enhancement.
In most cases,
exceptionally large and rare teeth are in less than desirable condition
but it is their sheer size that makes them in demand. Here is a
tooth that puts most teeth to shame even in sizes much smaller than it
is. Do not miss this one!
