ISURUS
HASTALIS MAKO SHARK TOOTH
- Morgan River,
South Carolina, U.S.A.
LOWER
MIOCENE PERIOD: 23 million years ago
This giant and
spectacular fossil tooth is of the extinct Mako shark called Isurus
hastalis. This prehistoric shark is a member of the White Shark
family. Teeth from Isurus hastalis look remarkably similar to the
modern Great White Shark less the serrations. Little is known
about this species and it is classified in the genus Isurus (Mako) due
to its characteristic smooth edges. Some consider this shark the
"Grandfather of the Great White".
Looking more like cold
blued steel rather than a large fossil shark tooth, the enamel on this
specimen is surreal. Specimen is intact with beautifully
patterned, chatoyant gunmetal blue
enamel. Anyone that collects
teeth from this shark can attest that specimens over 2.5 inches are rare
and highly desired. Specimens that exceed that are true
prizes and here this one is 2.75 inches!!! A tooth this size is
seldom ever seen and rarely offered. There is NO REPAIR AND NO
RESTORATION.
In most cases,
exceptionally large Isurus teeth are in less than desirable condition
but it is their sheer size that makes them in demand. Here is a
specimen that has no issues - just simply a big, beautiful killer tooth!
We get less than a dozen of these from the divers each year.
A
SELDOM AVAILABLE SIZE - RARE AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
