SUMMERVILLE ISURUS HASTALIS SHARK TOOTH - Summerville - Dorchester County, South Carolina

LOWER MIOCENE PERIOD:  23 million years ago

Fossil shark teeth collectors know this species well.  What is very rare though, is the site where this tooth was found - SUMMERVILLE!  This very rare white and gold fossil shark tooth is of the extinct Big-Tooth Mako shark called Isurus hastalis.  This prehistoric shark is a member of the White Shark family.  Teeth from Isurus hastalis look remarkably similar to the modern Great White Shark less the serrations.  Little is known about this species and it is classified in the genus Isurus (Mako) due to its characteristic smooth edges.  Some consider this shark the "Grandfather of the Great White".

This is the first time we have ever offered an Isurus shark tooth from Summerville.  It is the only specimen we have and is in superb condition displaying colors rivaling the finest and rarest hues similar to the Bone Valley Formation in Florida.  This tooth is also rare in this size at 2.6" in length.  Enamel is in excellent condition displaying hues of bright gold, light yellow and cream white.  The root is complete and very dense with complete mineralization and no pitting common to this site.  The root is all white and further adds to the beauty and rarity of this highly recommended prize specimen.  A close-up of the root can be seen above.  This tooth is as found and has NO REPAIR and NO RESTORATIONVery highly recommended!

This very rare white specimen is a land find from a site that is unique to producing very light, rare colored fossil shark teeth.  Fine quality shark teeth of any species from this site are considered true prizes amongst fossil shark teeth collectors and rarely are they available in the marketplace.  Usually, despite their pretty, light colors, the teeth are often pitted and poorly mineralized.  This fine and intact example has none of the usual damage found in teeth from Summerville.

FIRST AND ONLY ISURUS TOOTH WE HAVE EVER OFFERED FROM SUMMERVILLE - VERY RARE!
