ISURUS
HASTALIS TOOTH
- Wright River,
South Carolina, U.S.A.
LOWER
MIOCENE PERIOD: 23 million years ago
Fossil shark teeth
collectors know this species well. This large and colorful fossil tooth is of the extinct
Big-Tooth Mako shark called Isurus
hastalis. This prehistoric shark is a member of the White Shark
family. Teeth from Isurus hastalis look remarkably similar to the
modern Great White Shark less the serrations. Little is known
about this species and it is classified in the genus Isurus (Mako) due
to its characteristic smooth edges. Some consider this shark the
"Grandfather of the Great White".
This is a uniquely
colored and large fossil Isurus tooth. The enamel is a unique
light olive with orange, red and blue-green tones. The size is impressive enough but preservation for a tooth
this size is what makes this a collectible and desirable
example. Unlike large river teeth, the root on this gem is
extremely well mineralized and features a prominent nutrient hole in the
middle. Anyone that collects
teeth from this shark can attest that specimens measuring 2.5 inches are rare
and highly desired. There is NO REPAIR AND NO
RESTORATION, tooth is completely natural and
genuine with no enhancement.
