ULTRA
RARE LARGE BLOCK OF
ORIGINAL LA BREA TAR PIT FOSSIL MATRIX WITH PREHISTORIC FOSSIL COYOTE
JAWS
La Brea Tar Pits -
California, U.S.A.
MIDDLE (RANCHOLABREAN
AGE) TO LATE PLEISTOCENE PERIOD: 300,000 to 10,000 years ago
From one of the most
famous (AND UNIQUE!) fossil deposits in the entire world, the world
renown tar
seeps at the La Brea site in California is in a class all its own.
The nature of the asphalt and the magnitude of animals that were trapped
and died in prehistoric times has enabled scientists to study fossils in
states of preservation that normally would not be possible with other
forms of fossilization. The famous deposits are now off limits to
any private collecting but this specimen we offer was
decommissioned from a very old
small museum and resided in a private collection until now. It was collected long ago before the site was closed
and protected.
The nature of this listing affords a very rare
chance to acquire a genuine LA BREA MATRIX fossil.
We occasionally find Ice Age fossils from the La Brea pits loose and
cleaned of their tar matrix but finding a substantial block OF THE
ORIGINAL TAR SEEP FOSSIL-BEARING MATRIX with carnivore fossils like this
is well-suited for fascinating public exhibitions as everyone has heard
of this deposit but seeing the actual tar matrix WITH THE ORIGINAL
PREDATOR FOSSILS STILL EMBEDDED is seldom seen outside of the museum at
the site in California. This is a fantastic large block of the
original La Brea matrix with two prehistoric coyote mandibles with teeth
still embedded in the tar. The rich brown bone color irrefutably
proves this as a true La Brea source piece unlike the black bones of the
McKittrick site. The teeth are also 100% original and have been
preserved in a beautiful golden yellow and brownish cream hue.
Also within the matrix as numerous other bones and pieces of intact
organic plant matter such as wood pieces.
This is one of only two
La Brea matrix pieces we have for sale and it is the only piece we have
with any vertebrate remains. Fossils like this MUST come from old
collections of long ago since the site has been closed to public
collecting for some time and is guarded, considered to be one of the
most unique fossil-bearing deposits of our planet's prehistory.
ALL FOSSILS ARE 100%
ORIGINAL AS FOUND WITH NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.
DON'T CONFUSE THIS
OFFERING WITH MATERIAL THAT IS STILL BEING COLLECTED FROM THE MCKITTRICK
TAR SEEPS AND SOLD AS LA BREA.
While the Mckittrick field
is also known for fossils like La Brea, it is not THE
famous La Brea site which is no longer available to public collecting
and has been closed for a long time.
The way to tell is that the
bones of the Mckittrick field are black and the bone from the La Brea
deposits are brown.
