MEGALODON SHARK TOOTH WITH COLORFUL REFLECTIVE ENAMEL, SHARP SERRATIONS
WITHOUT RESTORATION

MIOCENE
to PLIOCENE PERIOD: 23.3 - 1.81 million years ago
This
enormous fossil shark tooth is from the jaws of a huge Megalodon
shark known scientifically as
Carcharocles megalodon
- the largest and deadliest
shark that ever lived and possibly the largest predator that ever lived!
The massive Megalodon shark is one of the largest and most fearsome
predators that ever existed on our planet. Owning a genuine, fine
quality tooth from these terrible creatures of prehistory is the pride
of many collectors. Most teeth found intact and unbroken
have average sizes ranging from 3 to approximately 4.5 inches. On
occasion, unbroken, complete examples 5 inches and over are found.
Very rare instances of unbroken, fine grade teeth at 6 inches in length
are ever found. At a maximum tooth length size of 7 inches,
probably less than a dozen of these teeth in an unrestored and
complete state, even exist.
Current and increasing
future demand will never be satisfied by the dwindling numbers of the
truly top grade specimens such as this beauty, hence their constantly
increasing prices each year.
Megalodon teeth have ALREADY
proven their rock-solid value appreciation in price during the last
decade when they possess fine preservation and remarkable beauty.
Only teeth
WITH NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION
that have premium features will appreciate in value and those that have
premium features at the top of the size chart will most likely,
appreciate beyond expectation since the source deposits for these teeth
have been over-collected and heavily depleted in the past two decades!
At a
whopping
6 inches in length
and equally impressive
4.75 INCHES ACROSS,
this
spectacular specimen sports features rarely seen in teeth that approach
this size. The only negative is there are lower portions of the
enamel missing and two nicks on one edge where the shark bit down and
damaged its own tooth in a frenzy of feeding. ALL the other qualities a tooth is
judged on are so impressive on this monster-size specimen, that this
condition is somewhat overridden in the overall admiration this tooth
fosters when held and viewed. The enamel resembles a powerful
thunderstorm taking over an otherwise blue sky. The edges are a
cloudy black that transition to blue and green central colors.
Underlying these reflective tones are touches of gold. The color
and reflectivity is really incredible when viewed in bright light.
The tooth has fine serrations with areas of feeding wear but most
incredible is the SERRATED TIP! Even the bases of the
blade where it meets the root on either side are unbroken (rare in large
teeth!) and show serrations. One blade edge base is wavy and
wrinkled. The tip is undamaged and complete with some of the best
serrations we ahave seen on the tip of a 6 inch tooth! This is VERY RARE in a
Megalodon shark tooth
this size. The root is also complete and solid lacking any missing portions.
Megalodon teeth this
impressive and at this size class are
extremely limited in the market, today. This MASSIVE specimen has
a dark and mysterious beauty to itself.
It is so broad and heavy
that even if you were a
seasoned collector who has handled numerous large shark teeth, there is
something about this one that just makes your jaw drop when it is in
your hand. Like every Megalodon tooth we sell, it is
100% NATURAL,
INTACT and most important in this size class,
WITHOUT ANY
RESTORATION OR REPAIR.
Unlike some sellers who machine polish, dip in a shiny clear sealer or
oil the teeth prior to photos taken, this tooth is natural and has only
been cleaned in our lab, acquired direct from the original diver who
found it.
Whether it is disclosed or not, once a Megalodon tooth gets in this size
range, very few fine grade and complete teeth without serious damage are
found.
Restoration and repair is very common on teeth this large.
Such work makes them worth A FRACTION in price of what a natural tooth
like this specimen is worth.
Five inches is considered the "magic
mark" in Megalodon teeth and the largest Megalodon teeth ever found
measure up to approximately 7.25 inches. Of the dozen or so in
existence over 7 inches, most have restoration and/or repair, in some
cases to artificially extend their lengths. Teeth that approach six
inches and up from are so hard to come by in a fine natural state
that most collectors will accept some repair or restoration because the
teeth are otherwise ugly as they were found. Furthermore, the demand
for teeth this large far exceeds supply so even very bad teeth will be
modified and restored to meet the insatiable demand. Large Megalodon
teeth with repair and restoration will never appreciate in value
anywhere near to the status that a natural tooth would, such as this
specimen. Unlike all other fossils, Megalodon teeth collectors do not
find such work done to fossil shark teeth acceptable or desirable and
serious collectors shy away teeth with repair or restoration.
The
personal experience of physically holding such a massive Megalodon tooth
as this in your hands is hard to describe.
If you wanted to own only one or two amazing specimens of these fossil
teeth, this is one candidate that should be seriously considered.
We guarantee that this fine investment-grade giant has absolutely
NO REPAIR AND NO
RESTORATION - a
serious problem today in the Megalodon tooth market when it comes to
large, impressive examples.
While we strictly avoid
Megalodon teeth with repair or restoration, Caveat emptor! as several
Megalodon teeth in dealers' inventories in this size class have SOME
repair or restoration and those sellers have no idea how to tell or the
means by which to vet their claims of "NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION".
Every tooth we offer, even
if from an old collection,
is run through our lab for
scrutiny, micro-blasted to clean it and inspected for any defects.
At a length of 52 feet
and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second
largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the
sperm whale. Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.
Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5
feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12
feet high. If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim
over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a
torso in excess of 10 feet thick! The jaws were so large that
this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole. A
predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine
vertebrates, especially whales. Fossil teeth have been found in
excess of 7 inches in length! Megalodon teeth are similar in
geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately
divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to
the modern white shark. It is also not fully understood why this
giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is. A day at
the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!
