RARE
GRADE 9 MONSTROUS 5.85 INCH MEGALODON
SHARK TOOTH
Beaufort - South Carolina, U.S.A.
MIOCENE
to PLIOCENE PERIOD: 23.3 - 1.81 million years ago
The
massive Megalodon shark is one of the largest and most fearsome
predators that ever existed in the ancient seas. Owning a genuine,
fine quality tooth from these terrible creatures of prehistory is the
pride of many collectors. This fine quality tooth came from the
famous shark known scientifically as
Carcharocles megalodon
- the largest and deadliest
shark that ever lived!
If you do
not collect Megalodon teeth or have no intention to do so, this tooth might
change your mind or at least, make for a special exception. If you
owned ONE truly large and impressive choice grade Megalodon tooth, this
would be a prime candidate! Approaching a staggering SIX INCHES,
this massive Megalodon tooth measures in at 5.85 inches. It is
100% NATURAL,
COMPLETE, INTACT and most important in this size class, WITHOUT
RESTORATION OR REPAIR.
Whether it is disclosed or not, once a Megalodon tooth gets in this size
range, very few fine grade and complete teeth without serious detracting damage
are found. Restoration and repair is very common on teeth this
large. Such work makes them worth A FRACTION in price of what a
natural tooth like this specimen is worth. Five inches is
considered the "magic mark" in river Megalodon teeth and the largest
Megalodon teeth ever found measure up to approximately 7.5 inches.
Most of the dozen and a half that exist over 7 inches have restoration
and/or repair! Teeth that approach six inches and up from there
are so hard to come by in a fine natural state that most
collectors will accept some repair or restoration because the teeth are
otherwise ugly as they were found. Furthermore, the demand for
teeth this large far exceeds supply so even very bad teeth will be
modified and restored to meet the insatiable demand. Large
Megalodon teeth with repair and restoration will never appreciate
in value like a natural tooth such as this specimen. Unlike all
other fossils, Megalodon teeth collectors do not find such work done to
fossil shark teeth acceptable or desirable and serious collectors shy
away teeth with repair or restoration.
With that
said, what you see above is
100% genuine
and this tooth is
WITHOUT ANY REPAIR OR RESTORATION.
The features of
this tooth put it in a Grade 9 category, (the highest for Megalodon
teeth is 10 but grade 10 teeth near the 6 inch mark and higher are
extremely hard to come by). Such a massive tooth
without ANY work done to it and with these features is extremely difficult
to find available for sale! Most beautiful is the naturally
reflective baby blue enamel that is wonderfully contrasted by the
midnight black root and bourlette. Serrations are present but
light from extreme feeding wear during the lifetime of the shark. Most teeth this large have issues with
the tip or blade edges such as breaks or bitten edges but this tooth has
only minor feeding wear. The tip is intact and fully present with
light feeding wear. Most noteworthy
is the complete, intact base of the tooth where it
meets the root. This region is 100% GENUINE AND INTACT with
fine preservation. There is a portion of calcified red-brown
secretions left over from attached marine organisms on the root. Root is also
strong and stable with some hydration cracking and damage.
Teeth this size that are of
this quality are so rare that they have proven to be highly promising
investments.
The
personal experience of physically holding such a massive Megalodon tooth
as this in your hands is hard to describe.
We guarantee that this fine investment-grade whopper has absolutely
NO REPAIR AND NO
RESTORATION - a
serious problem today in the Megalodon tooth market when it comes to
large, impressive examples such as this.
At a length of 52 feet
and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second
largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the
sperm whale. Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.
Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5
feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12
feet high. If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim
over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a
torso in excess of 10 feet thick! The jaws were so large that
this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole. A
predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine
vertebrates, especially whales. Fossil teeth have been found in
excess of 7 inches in length! Megalodon teeth are similar in
geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately
divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to
the modern white shark. It is also not fully understood why this
giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is. A day at
the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!
