SILVER MOTTLED PEARLESCENT ENAMEL FOSSIL MAKO SHARK TOOTH
St. Mary's River,
Georgia, U.S.A.
LOWER
MIOCENE PERIOD: 23 million years ago
This fossil
shark tooth is of the extinct Mako shark called Isurus
hastalis. This prehistoric shark is a member of the White Shark
family. Teeth from Isurus hastalis look remarkably similar to the
modern Great White Shark less the serrations. Little is known
about this species and it is classified in the genus Isurus (Mako) due
to its characteristic smooth edges. Some consider this shark the
"Grandfather of the Great White".
Fossil Mako shark
teeth with this
enamel chatoyancy and color are very rare and from very few sites in the
U.S.A.. Those sites are closely guarded and kept secret by the
divers that know them. One famous site known for
producing fossil shark teeth with stunning spotted and mottled enamel in
beautiful colors is the St. Mary's River in Georgia, U.S.A..
This beautiful
specimen possesses a highly reflective chatoyant enamel with pearly mint
green and yellowish undertones. Tooth is complete and of the
finest quality. There is NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.
