LARGE SPECTACULAR FOSSIL SEA LION JAW WITH ORIGINAL FANG, INCISOR AND
MOLAR TEETH FROM SHARK TOOTH HILL, CALIFORNIA,
U.S.A.
Temblor Formation (Shark Tooth Hill), Round Mountain Silt - Bakersfield, CA, U.S.A.
MIOCENE PERIOD:
15 - 12 million years ago
This is
a very robust, large and spectacular fossil partial lower jaw with all
original teeth from a full-size, adult Miocene Era pinniped "sea lion" of the species
Allodesmus kelloggi. The specimen comes from the famous Shark
Tooth Hill deposits in California. The entire specimen has been
carefully cleaned to expose very minute bone details and foramen.
The original teeth include a partial incisor, as well as a complete
large, canine fang and molar tooth. Color is beautiful and teeth
display obvious natural feeding wear. The fossil is in its
original condition with a single repair to the anterior end. The
teeth were not added from other discoveries and are the original
embedded teeth.
Specimen is NATURAL,
WITHOUT ANY ENHANCEMENT OR RESTORATION.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
for any marine mammal or shark fossil collection!
The rich Miocene fossil deposit known as "Sharktooth Hill"
located in Bakersfield (Kern County), California has a reputation as the finest and most
diverse fossil deposit of Miocene sharks, rays, bony fishes, turtles,
birds and mammals (both marine and terrestrial) of the entire Pacific
realm of North America. The formation is a result of silt spilling
out of a prehistoric river delta into a Middle Miocene sea that once
covered central California over 12 million years ago. This river
originated in the nearby mountains east of Bakersfield. The
fossil-bearing layer is thin ranging an average of only 6" -
18" thick but it spans approximately 100 square miles!
