ULTRA
RARE ICE AGE EURASIAN LYNX FANG TOOTH WITH PERFECT FULL ROOT
Undisclosed Cave in
the Ardennes Forest, Belgium
PLEISTOCENE
PERIOD: 150,000 years ago
This is a very rare
opportunity to one of the rarest European Ice Age predator fossil teeth
we have ever offered for sale. It is a complete and perfectly
preserved fang tooth with root from a Pleistocene Eurasian Lynx (Lynx
lynx). This is one of the few cat predators, along with the
Cave Lion, that roamed prehistoric Europe and Siberia in the last Ice
Age.
Fossil
remains of this creature are unheard of in private collections and
despite our aggressive collecting efforts for European Ice Age material,
this is the first time we have been fortunate enough to secure ANY
remains from this creature not to mention such a nice fang tooth.
It came from a group of fossils dug long ago from a cave in Belgium and
was found in
association with other Ice Age animal remains in the same layer and of
the same ivory-colored appearance.
This
is a complete fang tooth with full root. Sediment and mineral
deposits are in the fissures of the enamel and stuck to a small portion
of the crown surface. The tooth has had nothing done to it and it
is in truly perfect condition. The cave that produced this remarkable fossil
specimen was relatively dry and the state of preservation of this and
all other fossil remains that were collected there, is of the highest
degree. Numerous other extinct Pleistocene mammal remains were
found in the same layer and collected with this specimen. Some of
the species found in association with this fossil were wild boar, Cave
Hyena, Cave Lion, and juvenile Woolly Rhinoceros material. All of
the fossils were embedded in very light-colored cave floor sediment and
every tooth and bone was as white and perfect as modern animal remains.
If it were not for being from extinct species, the extant species
remains could have easily been mistaken for modern but the extinct
remains were as white and perfectly preserved as the extant remains that
were dug from the same layer. This is the primary weapon of this
predator and no better of a specimen will you find. There is
NO RESTORATION OR
REPAIR. Our
highest possible recommendation!
The
Eurasian Lynx, Lynx lynx, is a medium size predatory cat that
lived during the last Ice Age in Europe and Siberia. They are
still alive today in limited forested regions of Eastern Europe.
The animal stood over 2 feet high at the shoulders and was 3 to 4 feet
long with a 6 inch tail. This species is the largest of all the
lynxes.
This
animal is nocturnal and has an extremely elusive, solitary behavior,
making no screaming call to alert its presence. It prefers a
wooded environment, using the cover of the forest to stalk and ambush
its prey. These lynxes have been known to no only feed on small
herbivores such as rabbits and rodents, but they have been known to take
down much larger creatures such as wild boar and even roe deer and
reindeer.
