FINEST INVESTMENT GRADE
LARGE APEX PREDATOR FANG WITH FULL ROOT OF A PREHISTORIC BONE-CRUSHING BEAR-DOG"
Suwannee River, Florida,
U.S.A.
EARLY MIOCENE PERIOD:
20 - 18 million years ago
The bizarre fauna of prehistoric Florida
is nothing short of fascinating. Amongst every type of animal that
ever walked this part of the planet millions of years ago, fossil remains
of this
horrific and ferocious beast ranks as one of the rarest as its entire family lineage emerged and then
went completely extinct during the Miocene Period. This
FINEST INVESTMENT GRADE
complete large fossil fang with root is from an apex predator of North America that
has been featured on major natural history television shows including a
series called "Walking With Prehistoric Beasts".
Fine
grade fossils of Bear-Dogs are amongst
the rarest
of extinct North American apex predators. This particular fang of
a very large AMPHICYON or "Bone-Crushing" Bear Dog is THE FINEST and
most beautiful we have ever handled or seen. It is in such amazing
condition that it was presented to staff at the state of Florida's
Natural History museum who commented that the presence of serrations on
the crown as is seen in this specimen, is extremely rare and most often
not seen due to the voracious feeding and wear that is typically seen in
fossil teeth of this beast. In all the years we have handled many
fine southeastern U.S. vertebrate fossil specimens, we have not seen
such a large and well-preserved canine fang as this. Certainly it
is the FIRST TIME we know of one with serrations as seen above.
Perhaps this could even be a new species of Amphicyonidae due to the
presence of these serrations.
Despite its extreme rarity and having come from one of North America's
most dangerous prehistoric predators, this is simply a beautiful fossil
fang. The crown features a RARE presence of varying shades of BLUE
with cream, brown and black in a mottled pattern. The crown is in
a perfect unworn state with first-ever seen presence of serrations on
the edges running lengthwise up to the pointed and complete tip.
The root is also 100% complete with a complimentary warm brown.
This a COMPLETE fang with full root with no modern damage or repair. The
enamel is still naturally lustrous and intact.
In the Early Miocene of
Florida, no animal was more deadly than the large Amphicyons. This mammal was the apex
predator of its time and had no equal. This specimen would make an
incredibly unique talisman or pendant as well as a RARE addition to an apex predator fossil collection!
NO REPAIR and NO RESTORATION.
For the fossil of a
lifetime in rarity and display appeal, this is definitely
a
top recommendation of ours!
A
FANG IN THIS CONDITION AND COLOR IS AS SCARCE AS A SABER CAT FANG OR A
T. REX TOOTH FOR A FRACTION OF THE PRICE!
Made famous in the BBC
digital television presentation "Walking with Prehistoric
Beasts", the bear-dogs were ferocious carnivores that ranged from the
size of a medium dog to the size of a bear. These predators known as
Amphicyonids were neither dogs nor bears but were more closely related to
bears. They emerged and subsequently went extinct during the
Miocene, once inhabiting regions of Eurasia and North America.
Amphicyonidae were a
diverse group with species resembling all or part of modern dogs, hyenas
and bears. Leaner built species had cheek teeth designed for
shearing meat whereas the stouter and larger species had teeth designed to
crush bone. Males were larger than females. They lived in dens
and had the ability to dig large burrows.
