RARE
COMPLETE TRICERATOPS TOOTH WITH FULL ROOT IN ORIGINAL MATRIX
Lance
Formation, Wyoming, U.S.A.
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 68 - 65 million years ago
Collected
from the famous Lance Formation of Northwestern U.S.A., this is a
very RARE high quality tooth from the well known ceratopsian dinosaur Triceratops. This is an excellent educational
specimen that is in uncommon form with some of the original matrix it
was found in still attached. The tooth is a rare example with
complete forked root system and crown with feeding wear.
Because of the presence of the crown, it tells us the dinosaur died with
this tooth in its jaws. There are also related fossil bones in the
matrix with it. Near the tooth is a small armored gar scale.
The tooth has age fissures in it but they are not repaired breaks.
This superb example was not glued to a piece of stabilized dirt but is
exactly as it was found still embedded in the hard sandstone Cretaceous
matrix. The tooth is intact and complete with a beautiful dense
surface. This dinosaur fossil tooth would make an interesting
compliment to Hell Creek dinosaur fossils since this specimen comes from
a similar period but different formation of some of the most well-known
North American dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous.
NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION. Highly
recommended! Triceratops is the most
famous of the great horned dinosaurs. This plant-eating group has been found in
the fossil record in greater abundance than all the other varieties.
A full grown Triceratops is estimated to have weighed 11 tons, heavier
than a modern African bull elephant. Its skull was 6.5 feet long
with a pair of brow horns that exceeded 3 feet in length.
