FINEST DISPLAY DEVONIAN BRACHIOPOD COLONY WITH COMPLETE MUCROSPIRIFER AND SCHIZOPHORIA BRACHIOPODS

ON SHALE FROM OLDEST TETRAPOD FOSSIL SITE

Kowala Formation - Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

MIDDLE DEVONIAN PERIOD (GIVETIAN):  394.5 - 389.1 million years ago

Brachiopods are common in the fossil record and often, are neglected in collections despite the important role they played in the history of life on our planet.  Most of the brachiopod fossils you will find for sale are small, in their raw state and unattractive.  This a shame because most of these invertebrates had highly detailed and aesthetic anatomy in their shells yet, if not properly prepared in a lab, they look little more than ugly rocks.  If you wish for a beautiful brachiopod fossil of substantial size, this is a great offering because each specimen is of the finest preservation, fully lifelike with 3D detail and lab cleaned in our facility, setting on a piece of original Devonian shale as they might have looked when in a colony in prehistory.  These are not your ordinary, cheap, rock show fossils.  The price is higher than usually seen  because the costs of transporting the rock from the field and the time spent in the lab removing from the rock and carefully cleaning each brachiopod is expensive but the results are simply incredible.  You will be hard-pressed to find a more attractive and visually appealing example as this free-standing brachiopod fossil colony.

Coming from Eastern Europe, this is a brachiopod fossil with a provenance that is not usually seen in the commercial fossil market.  This fantastic display specimen shows supremely preserved, large 3D examples of Mucrospirifer sp. brachiopods with a lone Schizophoria sp. brachiopod.  All brachiopods are COMPLETE WITH BOTH VALVES INTACT AND CLOSED whereas most brachiopod fossils are found incomplete with only a single valve.  This species is found in the Middle Devonian Era of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland.  Interestingly enough, this happens to be the site (AND DATES BACK TO THE TIME) of the world's OLDEST TETRAPOD FOOTPRINTS ever found - fossil evidence of the first existence of four-legged vertebrates walking on land.

This is a stunning, naturally colored golden orange and gray-green specimen displaying impeccable, protruding darker brachiopods.  Each brachiopod fossil has been carefully extracted and cleaned by us in our lab facility.  They are 100% AUTHENTIC WITH NO REPAIR OR RESTORATION.  With the majority of brachiopod fossils found measuring less than .25" across, these brachiopod fossils measure 5 to 6 times that!  This is a large and VERY impressive display specimen of Devonian brachiopods from a famous scientific site in paleontology.

Brachiopods are marine shellfish that have existed on our planet since the Early Cambrian Period and though rare now, still exist today.  Brachiopods are bivalves but with bilateral symmetry but unequal valves.  Most species have beautiful ornamented shells but some are smooth.  The ventral side valve is called the PEDICLE VALVE and on the dorsal side, the BRACHIAL VALVE.  The   They attached themselves to another shell or the sea floor with a fleshy stalk called a pedicle.  The average size of brachiopods is 50 mm with the smallest found being only 5 mm in size.  Some species grew to sizes up to 8 cm across.

There are two fundamental types of brachiopods - the INARTICULATES and the ARTICULATES.  The inarticulates lack an articulated hinge on the back where the valves meet but the articulates possess this hinge.  The earliest forms were the inarticulates and the Paleozoic Age was their dominant time giving way to later periods where the articulate brachiopods became more prevalent.
