OUR LARGEST EVER MONSTROUS 24 INCH BLACK ARIETITES AMMONITE FROM GERMANY

Northern Germany

EARLY JURASSIC PERIOD (LIAS):  206 - 180 million years ago

As THE largest Arietites ammonite from Germany we have ever offered or encountered, this MONSTROUS giant ancient marine fossil is far more impressive in person than any photo could convey.  It features incredible shell structure and lack of deformity for its size.  Our lab spent over 160 hours preparing this specimen and the efforts have been rewarded with one of the most visually impressive ocean life fossils we have presented for purchase.  It features a stunning basic shell coloration of black with iron oxide mineral  undertones offering an unrivaled beauty.  The color required enhancement and sealing after preparation but is true to the original color found when the rock was first broken and much of the original black and gold remained.

This type ammonite is rare in this size from ANY world deposit but from Germany, we have no knowledge of one ever found larger.  This is not only a RARE fossil but one that can impress and captivate even the most scientifically disinterested audience.  Collected long ago by one of our associates, we just completed the final preparation of this prize specimen and are proud to offer such an exceptional treasure.  Repair from being extracted in three pieces and some minor restoration as well as regrinding to the center.  It is most certain that we would never offer any ammonite any larger than this type from Europe.  Large fine grade ammonites from Germany and France are much more difficult to locate now that many major autobahn roadways have already been dug and constructed.  In the past, when a new major highway was being excavated in Europe, often ammonites were found and collectors scrambled to retrieve them if they were lucky.  With most of the major construction projects long finished, and restrictions now in place on private quarries and digging, future discovery of large ammonites in Europe are mostly a fading memory.  Yet, even in the "golden years", an ammonite of this magnitude and quality was a lifetime discovery.  Excessively rare and with our highest recommendation for the ultimate in a rare prehistoric sea life fossil or the most visually impacting, three-dimensional interior design piece you could ask for.  At a fraction of the price of modern art and yet, this is the "real deal".  A genuine, authentic remnant of a monster of the ancient sea.

Ammonites are extinct members of the Cephalopod class.  Modern members include nautilus, squid and octopus.  They first appeared during the Silurian Period (435 million to 410 million years ago) and were abundant and widespread in the seas of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (175 million to 65 million years ago).  Ammonites are important index fossils—that is, they often link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods.

Ammonites varied greatly in size.  The largest known as small as 2 cm (0.75 in) in diameter.  During the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, ammonites evolved more streamlined shells for swimming and the structure of the shell became stronger.  Different shell shapes emerged as well, such as snail-like or uncoiled.

The shells of ammonites had hollow chambers separated by walls called septa.  A tube called the siphuncle, connected the body with the chambers allowing the animal to fill them with water or air, changing its buoyancy in order to  rise or drop in the ocean.  Only the last and largest chamber was occupied by the living animal.

Ammonites probably lived for one to six years, with the majority living two to four years.  They fed on plankton (tiny free-floating organisms), sea lilies, and smaller orthoceras.  Although many fed off the ocean floor, others may have caught plankton while floating or swimming via jet propulsion, expelling water through a funnel-like opening to propel themselves in the opposite direction.

Because ammonites lived exclusively in marine environments, their presence also indicates the location of prehistoric seas.
