OUR SECOND LARGEST EVER
MASSIVE GOLDEN ORANGE CRETACEOUS DINOSAUR-ERA AMMONITE
Agadir, Morocco
MID CRETACEOUS
PERIOD: 112 - 99.6 million years ago
This
is the second to largest ammonite we have ever offered of this kind and
it misses being considered the largest by only a quarter of an inch!
It is THE SECOND LARGEST pigmented specimen we have ever offered or come
across of this species. This is a stunning and intact specimen of the Procheloniceras species Cretaceous ammonites from
the coastal village of Agadir, Morocco. It is a robust type and
seldom is most often found in sizes ranging from a tea cup saucer to a
salad plate. Only very rarely are genuine specimens
found in this size class. This is an especially impressive example.
The front display side had original chamber detail present but the rock
matrix it was covered in required extensive grinding for its removal
hence the ground surface on the front.
ORIGINAL UNTOUCHED CHAMBER
DETAIL IS EXTENSIVELY PRESENT ON THE BACK
as seen in the above photos. We left some matrix on the opening on
the front and back side and other smaller fossils can be seen including
a smaller similar colored ammonite in the rock near the mouth on the
front. Some of the matrix on the back side shows portions of the
chambers with
much of the natural chamber detail preserved on one quadrant where the
matrix was able to be removed easily. Pigment is original on the
back and on the front where the trace fossils are and in some sections
of the large ammonite with the remainder of the natural limonite pigment
restored and then sealed to protect it. Out of everyone of these
we ever sold, this is certainly one of the most aesthetic in both form
and color. It is a monster and certainly will impress and draw
attention to all that experience it in person!!!
Beware of completely carved
fakes that offer no trace of original chamber detail on the reverse side
as this is a problem in the market today.
REVERSE
SIDE PHOTOS OF THE ABOVE AMMONITE SHOW THAT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THE VERY
COMMON CARVED FAKES.
Ammonites that occur
in this size naturally, are VERY RARE!
With
its three-dimensional form and texture, this ammonite specimen will
bring any event to a halt when displayed. It is in a class all its own,
not only desired by collectors, but treasured by interior designers and
architects alike for incorporating into a stunning display. Wonderfully
detailed. An exquisite specimen for such a rare size and an absolute
"show-stopper"! We highly
recommend this magnificent giant fossil to either augment a collection
or serve as a monumental interior design piece. The
pictures with the hand indicate the real magnitude of this enormous
specimen.
Ammonites
are extinct members of the Cephalopod class.
Modern members include nautilus, squid and octopus.
They first appeared during the Silurian Period (435 million to
410 million years ago) and were abundant and widespread in the seas of
the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (175 million to 65 million years
ago). Ammonites are important index
fossils—that is, they often link the rock layer in which they
are found to specific geological time periods.
Ammonites varied greatly in size.
The largest
known
as small
as 2 cm (0.75 in) in diameter. During the Jurassic and Cretaceous
periods, ammonites evolved more streamlined shells for swimming and the
structure of the shell became stronger. Different shell shapes emerged
as well, such as snail-like or uncoiled.
The shells of
ammonites
had hollow chambers separated by walls called septa. A tube called the siphuncle, connected the body with the
chambers allowing the animal to fill them with water or air, changing
its buoyancy in order to
rise or drop in the ocean.
Only
the last and largest chamber was occupied by the living animal.
Ammonites
probably lived for one to six years, with the majority living two to
four years. They fed on plankton (tiny free-floating organisms), sea
lilies, and smaller
orthoceras. Although many fed off the ocean floor, others may have
caught plankton while floating or swimming via jet propulsion,
expelling water through a funnel-like opening to propel themselves in
the opposite direction.
Because ammonites lived
exclusively in marine environments, their presence also indicates the
location of prehistoric seas.
