LYCOPTERA FISH - Rebes Formation, Liaoning Province, China
UPPER
JURASSIC PERIOD: 157 - 136 million years ago This
exquisitely detailed fossil fish specimen is of the species Lycoptera
davidi. The fine details are exhibited in the thin shale host
rock in which it was found. This is a complete and high quality specimen for
this type. This
fascinating bony fish fossil was found at one of the world's most famous
sites for very rare fossils. The world renown feathered-dinosaurs
are found here. The world's oldest known flower blossom fossil was
discovered here, as well!!! The Lycoptera davidi are part of the famous
Jehol biota group. These fossils are excavated in actively
researched quarries which yield a huge variety of preserved specimens of
prehistoric life. As of the year 2003, over 60 species of fossil
plants, some 1000 species of fossil invertebrates, and nearly 70 species
of fossil vertebrates have been recorded in these rocks, dating back to
125 -135 million years ago (Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous).
The region was once a forest with freshwater lakes. The entire
area was rapidly buried by ash several times by a series of nearby
volcanic eruptions. The result is a treasure trove of exquisite
fossils of impeccable preservation and detail in a fine, layered shale.
