EXTREMELY RARE
MASSIVE MOSASAURUS
ASSOCIATED JAWS IN ORIGINAL MATRIX
Phosphate Deposits - Khouribga, Morocco
LATE CRETACEOUS
PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
The
Mosasaur was the legendary sea monster but one that really did live -
just not when humans were around, fortunately. Mosasaurs were apex
predators in the Cretaceous seas, that is, they had no predator above
them. Some species were giant, attaining lengths
of nearly 60 feet! A full grown Mosasaur of this size
had a 6 foot long skull with 4 foot jaws capable of opening 3 feet
apart. Like modern constrictors, the lower jaws were
two separate units and could spread apart at the anterior end,
stretching to give this amazing creature the ability to swallow huge
prey.
This amazing fossil is an
EXTREMELY
RARE specimen of the upper and lower jaws of a FULL GROWN
Mosasaurus
beaugei, the largest
identified mosasaur species from the Oulad Abdoun Basin of Morocco and
one of five species known in the Maastrichtian phosphates of the
Ganntour Basin (Morocco).
These
jaws came from a nearly 60 foot creature and
were recovered exactly as they are shown. They have not been reconstructed or repositioned in any way. The entire
specimen was painstakingly extracted in this single, large block of
matrix. This associated set is the left side of the skull consisting of an upper and lower jaw. In the
photos above, the maxilla (upper jaw) is the jaw at the top of the
matrix, the mandible (lower jaw) is shown beneath it. Having
been found together makes this fossil an incredibly rare specimen as we
have two major associated jaw sections from the same skull of an
approximately 59 foot Mosasaurus. Furthermore, all the teeth that were in these jaws
when the creature was alive are still present. The maxilla has
all the teeth still fully rooted in the bone and the mandible has all but
two teeth and these two teeth are present STILL WITH THE ROOTS embedded
in the matrix just aside of the bone. All of the teeth were found
in the way they are shown and
NONE OF THE TEETH WERE GLUED IN OR
RECONSTRUCTED from a non-associated specimen. Very rare in this
condition and size!!! Take a close look at the last three
photos. Those spectacular teeth are H-U-G-E in comparison to an
adult's hand.
Unlike the
much smaller, fabricated, tourist-trade "in
matrix" mosasaur jaws you see on the market and especially Ebay, this is a
VERY RARE and
genuine fossil specimen best suited for an advanced collection,
public exhibit or research facility.
This is one of THE LARGEST
AND MOST IMPRESSIVE mosasaur jaw we have ever offered.
It has
NO REPRODUCTION OF BONES OR GLUING OF UNRELATED BONES ONTO THE MATRIX. This is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to acquire a large and very
rare fossil specimen of
exquisite preservation from a massive prehistoric creature. If you purchase for a museum,
educational facility or are an advanced private collector, this is a substantial
specimen surely
to be a proud and valued addition.
