RARE MASSIVE DOUBLE PARAMBLYPTERUS FISH WITH MOLLUSKS ON SLATE FROM THE PERMIAN

Odernheim / Rhineland - Pfalz, Germany

EARLY PERMIAN PERIOD:   290 million years ago

SPECIAL NOTE:  The current laws in this region of Germany now forbid the collection of these remarkable fossils.  Such legislation has permanently ended the supply of such magnificent specimens such as this one being offered here.  This rare example comes from an old German private collection and was collected long ago before the ban was enacted.  With digging in the formation now off-limits, these German Permian fossils are sure to appreciate in value and become increasingly difficult to acquire.

In all fine quality, collectible fossils, the presence of subtle but rare features will have a dramatic impact in the value and price of a specimen.  To be able to recognize and appreciate these features separates the true high-grade, world-class examples from the plethora of lesser quality specimens of the same species.  This MASSIVE double fossil Paramblypterus duvernoyi is a prime example of this.  Features that are both obvious (massive ORIGINAL slab, very large fish and highly aesthetic natural coloration to specimen) and subtle put this one in a class all its own.  Sure, you may find lesser priced Paramblypterus fossils, but they will be painted, smaller and lack much of the preserved features that this specimen offers.  This fossil shown above is akin to a Rolls Royce in comparison to the Fords you may find elsewhere, to put it plainly.  This specimen and FG009 will most definitely be the finest examples you will ever find as they are near impossible to improve upon and highly uncommon in their size.

Upon close inspection, some remarkable features are beautifully seen.  Skull bone, fin and scale detail is remarkably intact and present in a state of preservation that is rarely encountered in these.  The Paramblypterus was very primitive fish had an asymmetrical tail with the longer upper lobe having a small edge of fin and the rest being fleshy, covered with heavy scales like the rest of the body.  The close-up images show the impeccable fin and scale detail.  Other factors that make this a top-rate Paramblypterus is its German Permian Red Layer provenance, the large and ORIGINAL slate host rock in which it was found, and the choice preservation of body scales without the customary large patches of scales missing as is common on inferior specimens.  Scattered in the slab are original mussels that were buried when the fish were buried almost 300 million years ago.  Entire slab is original and displays a GORGEOUS combination of naturally occurring layers of harvest gold and warm gray.  The fish are NOT colored as many other specimens we have seen.  Both fish are very well mineralized and have not been glued into the slab (common with much lesser-priced versions), nor composited where two individuals were artificially attached together to make a showy but manufactured specimen (also common).  This is a REAL, naturally occurring double on ALL original matrix!!!  Fish and Mussel fossils are guaranteed genuine with NO FABRICATION OR RESTORATION.

The Paramblypterus duvernoyi fish was a primitive osteichthyan (bony fish) and a member of the actinopterygians or ray-finned fish.  Now extinct, Paramblypterus duvernoyi possessed some very primitive features, most notably, its shark-like tail with a fleshy upper lobe.

We have prepared this beauty in our own lab and the care taken in its conservation makes the difference.  It is MUCH NICER in person that appears in the above images.  Dramatic natural coverage of its original heavy armored scales is something that truly must be seen to appreciate.  No doubt, you will be hard-pressed to ever encounter another Paramblypterus fossil like this!  Definitely a RARE specimen for the advanced and most demanding collectors!

The back of the entire slab has been reinforced with fiberglass.  A large Lucite easel stand is included to display the slab or it can be hung on a wall as hardware has already been glassed in.  This finest of display fish fossils is a most aesthetic version of this rare and beautiful Permian fish!  A pure joy and breath-taking experience to behold in person!!!
