PARAMBLYPTERUS FISH ON
MOUNTED SLATE
- Odernheim / Rhineland - Pfalz, Germany
EARLY
PERMIAN PERIOD: 290 million years ago
This is
a nice yet affordable example of the Permian fish Paramblypterus
duvernoyi. Some excellent features are present including fine
detail of the individual scales. These very primitive fish had an asymmetrical
tail with the upper lobe having a small edge of fin and the
rest being fleshy, covered with heavy scales like the rest of the
body. This specimen displays this feature well with superb detail
that exceeds it appearance in these images. Fossils like this one
from the Permian Red Beds in Germany are considered amongst the finest
provenance for this period. Slate host rock was very thin which
necessitated mounting it on a second rectangular plate to protect
against breakage.
SPECIAL NOTE:
The current laws in
this region of Germany now forbid the collection of these remarkable
fossils. Such legislation has permanently ended the supply of such
magnificent specimens such as this one being offered here. This
rare example comes from an old German private collection and was
collected long ago before the ban was enacted. With digging in the
formation now off-limits, these German Permian fossils are sure to
appreciate in value and become increasingly difficult to acquire.
The
Paramblypterus duvernoyi species fish was a primitive osteichthyan (bony fish) and
a member of the actinopterygians or ray-finned fish. No extinct, Paramblypterus
possessed some very primitive features, most
notably, its shark-like tail with a fleshy upper lobe.
