PARAMBLYPTERUS DUVERNOYI FISH ON SLATE - Odernheim / Rhineland - Pfalz, Germany

EARLY PERMIAN PERIOD:   290 million years ago

Usually with fossils, the most subtle features can mean a world of difference in the rarity and value of a specimen.  This fossil Paramblypterus duvernoyi is a prime example of this.  Upon close inspection, some remarkable features are intact and present in a state of preservation that is usually not encountered.  These very primitive fish had an asymmetrical tail with the upper lobe having a small edge of fin and the rest being fleshy, covered with heavy scales like the rest of the body.  The second to last image above shows the incredible remains preserved on the slate.  Other factors that make this a top-rate Paramblypterus is its German Permian Red Layer provenance, the large and ORIGINAL slate host rock in which it was found, and the complete preservation of all body scales without the customary large patches of scales missing as is common on inferior specimens.

The Paramblypterus duvernoyi species fish was a primitive osteichthyan (bony fish) and a member of the actinopterygians or ray-finned fish.  Now extinct, Paramblypterus possessed some very primitive features, most notably, its shark-like tail with a fleshy upper lobe.

We have prepared this beauty in our own lab and the care taken in its conservation makes the difference.  It is MUCH NICER in person that appears in the above images.  Dramatic natural coverage of its original heavy armored scales is something that truly must be seen to appreciate.  This is one of the nicest Paramblypterus we have seen and is sure to please the most demanding collectors in all aspects.

The back of the entire slab has been reinforced with fiberglass.  An easel stand is included to display the slab as the first image shows or wall-hangers can be epoxied to the resin back for a wall mount as shown in the last image.  A rare and large display example of this beautiful Permian fish!
