ULTRA RARE
EGYPTIAN PRE-DYNASTIC FLINT BORER BLADE
Exposed Site - Lower Nile
Region, Northeast Egypt
FAYUM
TRADITION : 7,400 - 6,400 years ago This
FAYUM TRADITION tool was found on an exposed site in the Desert in Northeast
Egypt. It was masterfully fashioned by the earliest farming
peoples of Egypt between 7,400
and 6,400 years ago, long before the first dynasties of Ancient Egypt
were to be. This
type of tool is called a BLADE BORER. It is very well made of
flint with steep flaking down both blade sides to yield a strong robust
body. This tool would have been used to pierce hides for shelter
and clothing manufacture. Masterfully made and rarely found due to
such diminutive size. A necessary and important part of the Fayum
tool kit needed for everyday living over 6400 years ago! In 'as found' condition with
NO
RESTORATION, NO REPAIR and NO MODERN DAMAGE.
Stone tools from Pre-Dynastic Egypt are so rare as a result of strict
Egyptian laws in place now protecting and preventing all export of such
artifacts. This VERY RARE specimen is one of only two we will
offer. It was collected several decades ago and remained in the
private collection of the original collector up until our recent
acquisition. Tools from this period are so rare in fact, that we
feel certain we will not acquire any more and no effort will be made to
create a separate section on this website as we will offer the ONLY TWO
specimens we have here in this section. This blade is a prize
find for the advanced collector of tools from the EARLIEST farming
peoples of the Nile.
At
the end of the Pleistocene Period in the Nile Region, temperate
conditions made for an ideal environment for the birth of a highly
specialized Neolithic society between 7000 B.C. and 3000 B.C.. The
Neolithic Fayum farming societies of Egypt cultivated emmer wheat and
flax for cloth production. They grew their crops by the lake in
the Fayum depression, hence the name for their tool culture. The
Fayum peoples also raised and herded goat, sheep, pig and cattle.
Their living quarters left no trace in some regions but were likely made
from reeds or skins over a light frame. Wattle-and-daub villages
have also been attributed to these peoples. The Fayum society
represents the oldest evidence of food production from the Nile dating
back to 4400 B.C..
