RARE UNIQUE DOUBLE-SIDED PARAMBLYPTERUS PERMIAN FISH FOSSIL

Odernheim / Rhineland - Pfalz, Germany

EARLY PERMIAN PERIOD:   290 million years ago

SPECIAL NOTE:  The current laws in this region of Germany now forbid the collection of these remarkable fossils.  Such legislation has permanently ended the supply of such magnificent specimens such as this one being offered here.  This rare example comes from an old German private collection and was collected long ago before the ban was enacted.  With digging in the formation now off-limits, these German Permian fossils are sure to appreciate in value and become increasingly difficult to acquire.

In all fine quality, collectible fossils, the presence of subtle but rare features will have a dramatic impact in the value and price of a specimen.  To be able to recognize and appreciate these features separates the true high-grade, world-class examples from the plethora of lesser quality specimens of the same species.

This rare DOUBLE-SIDED fossil Paramblypterus is a prime example of this.  Many features shown here set this specimen apart from poor commercial examples.  Even bad grade specimens of this rare fish fossil are seldom available and when they are, they are usually painted, smaller and lack much of the preserved features that this specimen offers.  Upon close inspection, some remarkable features are beautifully seen.  The side shown in the first image has a spectacular positive fossil impression of a Paramblypterus .  The back side has a larger negative impression of the same species fish where this slab was split from another layer with a positive impression.  On the side with the positive fossil impression, fin and scale detail is remarkably intact and present in a state of preservation that is rarely encountered in these.  The Paramblypterus was a very primitive fish that had an asymmetrical tail with the longer upper lobe having a small edge of fin and the rest being fleshy, covered with heavy scales like the rest of the body.  The close-up images show the impeccable fin and scale detail of the positive impression on one side.  Dramatic natural coverage of its original heavy armored scales is something that truly must be seen to appreciate.  Slab shows a natural black fossil fish on one side and a negative impression of the same species on the other.  Can be displayed from either side!  This RARE fish fossil is guaranteed 100% genuine.  NO RESTORATION OR FABRICATION.

The Paramblypterus fish was a primitive osteichthyan (bony fish) and a member of the actinopterygians or ray-finned fish.  Now extinct, Paramblypterus duvernoyi possessed some very primitive features, most notably, its shark-like tail with a fleshy upper lobe.  To put in perspective just how old the Paramblypterus is, these primitive fish were around well before the very first dinosaurs!
