MASSIVE
SPINOSAURUS
DINOSAUR TOOTH -
Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
If you
have been holding out for a supreme and giant-size Spinosaurus tooth
then this may be the last opportunity to secure such a fine specimen. It is quite discouraging what is now on the
market. In a recent check of other sellers, the few teeth we found
over 4" were either junk or were clever composites of a root from
one tooth puttied on to the crown of another specimen. The
well-known online auction site is even worse and we've yet to see a
GENUINE single, "no-tricks" large dinosaur tooth of ANY
SPECIES listed there in well over a year and a half! Lots of real
good-looking big teeth but all with serious issues not disclosed in the
text.
This
remarkable specimen is so rare that in this past year, the aggregate
efforts of all our miners produced less than a handful of teeth over
4". Only a few teeth were collected that measured at or near
5 inches! This tooth measures right at 5 inches and is intact
except for a single fracture that has been repaired approximately 1 inch
from the tip. It is a very robust example and boasts of NO
RESTORATION! This is absolutely amazing to have this kind
of condition on a 3" tooth not to mention a FIVE INCH
WHOPPER!!! The surface of the enamel is dense and excellent and has a
superb dense sheen and ridged detail on BOTH SIDES as shown above.
The color is a rich walnut brown and mahogany. Encrustation on
the root is present as is light encrustation on the naturally worn tip
caused by the dinosaur's repeated use. Without the wear, this is
actually a 6" tooth and would be one of the largest specimens we
have seen. Entire tooth has been chemically stabilized to protect
against damage.
What is
extremely rare is that this tooth was found just this year. Anyone
that has been shopping for Spinosaurus teeth can attest to what we have
been saying for the last several years - the formation is no longer
producing fine grade teeth in the larger sizes. We are now digging
at depths of as much as 24 meters, THREE TIMES! the previous
depths. Still, the source is practically depleted. A tooth
such as this amazingly rare example is definitely one of the most
promising investments one can make at this point in time. In the
last year of digging, the cumulative effort of many of our mining
partners produced less than 5 quality large teeth 4" and
over. This is the LARGEST
TOOTH of the entire year's
efforts of 2003 to date!!! Need we say more about what the situation
is. Since dinosaurs are long gone, things will only get worse.
The
dinosaur this specimen came from would have been the maximum size
creature known!
Teeth in this size
and this condition are
nearly priceless since very few exist to compare to. We strongly
recommend this amazing example to any collector because prizes like
these are sure to be strong investments in even the near future
considering the current state of the source and its nearly exhausted
supply of large teeth. Steady appreciation of prices in the
market have already reflected that in the last year and a half.
The
remains of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus were first
discovered by a German collector in 1912 in central Egypt. A variety
of pieces were recovered including a skull and teeth. On the evening
of April 24, 1944, a British bombing run on Munich destroyed these and
many other rare fossil specimens.
Spinosaurus is one of the
longest and strangest of all carnivorous dinosaurs. At 50 feet long
and 4 tons in weight, it was truly a monster! Its most unusual
feature was a row of broad club-shaped spines 6 feet tall, projecting
upward from the backbone. It's believed that these spines were
covered with a sail of skin which could be raised by the creature as a
social display or as a way to regulate body temperature. To this day, no other
dinosaur has been found with such tall and broad-shaped neural spines.
Fossil remains of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus are only found in the
North African Sahara Desert. Contrary to the inhospitable desert
environment where Spinosaurus fossils are found today, this region was a
vast swampy tropical paradise abundant with life during the Cretaceous
Period when Spinosaurus was alive and inhabiting its muddy river shores
and bogs.
VERY
RARE IN THIS SIZE - TOOTH WOULD BE 6 INCHES IF UNWORN!
