MASSIVE
SPINOSAURUS
DINOSAUR TOOTH -
Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
Without a
doubt, this is the largest quality specimen SPINOSAURUS
tooth we have had
in our inventory to date. It came from an exceptionally large,
full-grown adult Spinosaurus and is NEARLY
5.5" IN LENGTH!
Unlike
many large teeth on the market that are mostly root compared to the
overall length, this is an honest-to-goodness whopper tooth that is
mostly tooth above the jaw.
The tip
on this massive specimen is sharp but with very minor feeding damage
incurred when the dinosaur was still alive. The enamel and hue is of
a dark walnut brown then transitioning to a light caramel orange as one
approaches the base. Repair has been performed on the body near
the tip and in areas near the base and minor restoration was needed on
the backside near the root in an area approximating only 3 - 4% of the
overall tooth's surface. The tooth has been stabilized to protect the integrity and
intactness of this incredible find and these repairs in no way detract from its rarity or
value considering the degree of work performed and the fact that this
tooth is a genuinely massive specimen. ZERO encrustation on the root
end proves this to be a true monster tooth.
Unlike
other dealers, we provide FULL DISCLOSURE on every specimen.
You know exactly what you are buying when you invest in one of our fossil teeth.
What is
extremely rare is that this tooth was found just this past year. Anyone
that has been shopping for Spinosaurus teeth can attest to what we have
been saying for the last several years - the formation is no longer
producing fine grade teeth in the larger sizes. We are now digging
at depths of as much as 24 meters, THREE TIMES! the previous
depths. Still, the source is practically depleted. A tooth
such as this amazingly rare example is definitely one of the most
promising investments one can make at this point in time. In the
last year of digging, the cumulative effort of many of our mining
partners produced less than 5 quality large teeth 4" and
over. This is the
LARGEST TOOTH of the entire year's
efforts of 2002!!! Need we say more about what the situation
is. Since dinosaurs are long gone, things will only get worse.
Many
times when an exceptionally large dinosaur tooth is offered on the
market, it has a very long root compared to the tooth portion that
existed ABOVE THE JAW. These teeth are touted as huge rarities and
passed off as "giant dinosaur teeth" when in fact, the
specimen is mostly all root, and what's worse, sometimes this root is
artificially created with resin and putty. Do not let yourself be
fooled. When you are comparing teeth, look at JUST THE PORTION
WITHOUT THE ROOT. Use this as a gauge to analyze a large size
tooth. If the price seems like a great deal for such a large tooth
and the root is half the length of the tooth or more, then it's a bad
deal and cannot be compared to a tooth with a normal root length of
about 1/3 the overall length of the tooth, or less. A common
trick in the market is to attach either a bunch of sand mixed with glue
on the end of the tooth's root to exaggerate the length or even worse,
glue another tooth's root on to the end and disguise the seam with more
sand and glue. In either case, these look like very large teeth
but they are faked. Don't be fooled when you are shopping for ANY
large dinosaur teeth. These are common practices of both
unscrupulous and uninformed dealers. It really pays to know who
you are buying from! I see both of these practices done quite
frequently in the large tooth market and numerous junk teeth are selling
for ridiculous high prices. (ESPECIALLY in the online auctions!) The
root on this incredible specimen is partially present and is only
approximately 25% of the overall length putting this tooth at over
4" that protruded above the gum!!! The
dinosaur this specimen came from would have been the maximum size
creature known!
Teeth in this size
and this condition are
nearly priceless since very few exist to compare to. We strongly
recommend this amazing example to any collector because prizes like
these are sure to be strong investments in even the near future
considering the current state of the source and its nearly exhausted
supply of large teeth. Steady appreciation of prices in the
market have already reflected that in the last year and a half.
