SPINOSAURUS
DINOSAUR TOOTH
- Sahara Desert, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
The most
spectacular member of the uncommonly known family of Spinosauridae,
Spinosaurus had an elaborate sail on its back. Broad, skin-covered
spines over 6 feet long projected upward from the backbone. Two
different purposes for these spines have been suggested. The sail
may have been used as a heat exchanger or it may have been a recognition
feature for other Spinosaurus. Spinosaurus
was a giant, 50 feet long and weighed more than 4 tons. The teeth
of the Spinosaurus were also different from those of other carnosaurs
(meat-eating lizards); they were straight rather than curved. They
had a crocodile-like lower jaw lined with medium sized teeth and
probably ate smaller dinosaurs and other animals. The
teeth offered here are of my Grade 3 category - VERY GOOD TO GOOD.
Each will have its own distinctive characteristic. Nicer specimens
tend to run smaller in this category with the larger teeth having more
repair and/or wear. Enamel is not typically the best on the
larger teeth in this lot but many smaller teeth have phenomenal enamel
with many being in perfect condition and no repair. An excellent
opportunity to purchase a genuine Spinosaurus tooth at a very affordable
price. They were found in the Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco. These represent an excellent value for a
nice grade Spinosaurus
tooth at such a reasonable price.
