SPINOSAURUS
DINOSAUR TOOTH
- Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
The most
spectacular member of the uncommonly known family of Spinosauridae,
Spinosaurus had an elaborate sail on its back. Broad, skin-covered
spines over 6 feet long projected upward from the backbone. Two
different purposes for these spines have been suggested. The sail
may have been used as a heat exchanger or it may have been a recognition
feature for other Spinosaurus. Spinosaurus
was a giant, 50 feet long and weighed more than 4 tons. The teeth
of the Spinosaurus were also different from those of other carnosaurs
(meat-eating lizards); they were straight rather than curved. They
had a crocodile-like lower jaw lined with medium sized teeth and
probably ate smaller dinosaurs and other animals. The
teeth offered here are of my Grade 2 - VERY FINE TO FINE category. Each will have its own desirable and distinctive
characteristic. Some will be typical in size with nice enamel and
some natural tip wear, others may be massive with substantial wear from the dinosaurs' use.
Some may exhibit minor professional repair or restoration but the work
does not detract and other features may put those teeth in a
value bracket higher than a tooth that may be intact.
These fossil teeth
would be considered AAA quality by most but are a step down in our
collection and offered at a substantial savings. An excellent
opportunity to purchase a quality Spinosaurus tooth at a very affordable
price. They were found in the Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco.
Genuine Spinosaurus teeth of this category are rare and represent an excellent value for a fine grade
tooth at such a reasonable price.
