LARGE 3.5 INCH INTACT LARGE
SPINOSAURUS
DINOSAUR TOOTH WITH WEAR GROOVE
Tegana
Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
For
dinosaur teeth collectors, this impressively large
Spinosaurus aegyptiacus dinosaur tooth is a super example. It
measures 3.5 inches in length. Usually in this size class, the
teeth require repair but this rare beauty lacks any repair! Most
interesting, this tooth spent some time ripping meat as there is a
natural feeding groove worn down the sides from rubbing against an
opposing tooth.
NO REPAIR and NO FABRICATION.
Color is natural and a nice warm mix of gold, orange and red. Not
many large INTACT teeth that haven't been doctored up left on the
market! WARNING:
Most
large dinosaur teeth in the market today are clever composites of a root
from one tooth puttied on to the crown of another specimen.
Another common trick today is to start with a massive but heavily worn
stub tooth and fabricate a nice slender tip then stain the entire fake
tooth a smooth, lustrous brown. If you see a large tooth in
today's market that is of such extraordinary perfect condition, you
should be HIGHLY SUSPECT AND GET EVERY POSSIBLE GUARANTEE OF NO
FABRICATION OR RESTORATION IN WRITING BY THE DEALER!!! Ebay is
even worse and we've yet to see a GENUINE single, "no-tricks"
large African dinosaur tooth of ANY SPECIES listed there in the last
couple of years. Lots of real good-looking big teeth but all with
serious issues not disclosed in the text.
Don't be
fooled when you are shopping for ANY large dinosaur teeth. These
are common practices of both unscrupulous and uninformed dealers.
It really pays to know who you are buying from! We see both
of these practices done quite frequently in the large tooth market and
numerous junk teeth are selling for ridiculous high prices as well as
"too good to be true" prices. (ESPECIALLY on EBAY where
fake
EVERYTHING is
RAMPANT!)
The
remains of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus were first
discovered by a German collector in 1912 in central Egypt. A variety
of pieces were recovered including a skull and teeth. On the evening
of April 24, 1944, a British bombing run on Munich destroyed these and
many other rare fossil specimens.
Spinosaurus is one of the
longest and strangest of all carnivorous dinosaurs. At 50 feet long
and 4 tons in weight, it was truly a monster! Its most unusual
feature was a row of broad club-shaped spines 6 feet tall, projecting
upward from the backbone. It's believed that these spines were
covered with a sail of skin which could be raised by the creature as a
social display or as a way to regulate body temperature. To this day, no other
dinosaur has been found with such tall and broad-shaped neural spines.
Fossil remains of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus are only found in the
North African Sahara Desert. Contrary to the inhospitable desert
environment where Spinosaurus fossils are found today, this region was a
vast swampy tropical paradise abundant with life during the Cretaceous
Period when Spinosaurus was alive and inhabiting its muddy river shores
and bogs.
