JUVENILE
SPINOSAURUS DINOSAUR SKULL SECTION WITH TEETH AND NOSTRIL
Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
A
predatory dinosaur jaw rarely becomes available for sale. Most we
have encountered on the market are fakes using crocodile or mosasaur
jaws with very poor quality and very poor grade, mismatched Spinosaurus
teeth glued into the sockets. Without the presence of any ORIGINAL
teeth still embedded in the jaw, it is impossible to attribute
the bone to a species of which a skull is not known to science.
Such is the case the Spinosaurus aegypticus. Jaw and skull
elements of this ferocious prehistoric beast is perhaps, the most often
faked as popularity is high for the dinosaur and the round teeth can
easily be placed in the sockets of crocodile and mosasaur jaws that also
possess round, conical teeth. For the past several years, we have
routinely seen these fabricated "jaws" selling for over $7000
with one fraudulent seller on Ebay (where else?) selling what seems like
a never-ending supply of these "rare fossils". Real
Spinosaurus dinosaur bone from the Kem Kem, the only place in the world
that is now producing Spinosaurus fossils, will have a specific color
and patina. Most important, it is imperative to positively
identify a partial jaw of a dinosaur, if an ORIGINAL tooth is found
still embedded in the bone. This
specimen we offer here is unique, rare and valuable for several
reasons. The center
tooth IS original and
the bone was found with this worn tooth still firmly attached to the
maxilla. This allows POSITIVE
IDENTIFICATION of this rare fossil skull section.
The bone is complete
with NO RESTORATION and NO REPAIR.
The first and third teeth were added to the jaw as this skull section
was found only with the middle, worn tooth. The other two teeth
were carefully matched to the color, size and age of this dinosaur and
both exactly fit the openings and are positioned as they would be when
the animal was alive. Since
there have never been enough remains of a Spinosaurus to completely
recreate a skull, some anatomical elements are theorized. A
variety of artistic depictions of Spinosaurus show different placement
of the nasal opening with respect to proximity with the teeth and known
crook at the front of the snout. This fossil provides proof of
just where the opening was and a highlighted area in a painting of a
Spinosaurid dinosaur skull shown below, shows the location of where this
specific fossil would have come from. Genuine
identifiable skull elements of any dinosaur are rare and true
cornerstones of advanced collections, whether public or private.
This specimen, with its obvious nasal cavity and one original tooth not
only absolutely attribute this fossil to a specific dinosaur, but it
provides valuable information as to the exact placement of the nasal
opening being just above the hooked crook towards the anterior of the
snout. Highly unique, rare and a serious paleontological treasure
with endless display appeal!
