CARCHARODONTOSAURUS
DINOSAUR TOOTH
-
"Taouz" region
of the Sahara Desert, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
One of the most unique
colorations I have seen in these teeth. Simply beautiful!
The pattern is not the enamel peeling but is the color mix on the INTACT
enamel as shown. This robust example features nice serrations and
tip with a remarkably white root portion. An impressive size with
no putty filler, only fracture repairs which do not detract from this
rarity as all the pieces of the tooth are present including the
tip. Surface of tooth enamel is smooth and glossy with no peel
on display side. Again, this bizarre coloration is IN the enamel
and not flaking off enamel as it may appear. This
North African carnosaur (meat-eating lizard) had a massive tail, a bulky
body, and heavy bones. Its arms were short and had three-fingered
hands with sharp claws. Carcharodontosaurus
grew up to 45 feet long, perhaps weighing up to 8 tons.
It had a skull 6 feet long. It had large, powerful jaws
with long, serrated, sharp teeth up to 8 inches long. Although
Carcharodontosaurus
was larger than T-rex, its brain was smaller. Carcharodontosaurus
was closely related to Gigantosaurus but not to T-rex.
Carcharodontosaurus
was a more primitive dinosaur than T-rex. Although
parts of these large carnivorous dinosaurs were discovered some time
ago, their huge size has just recently come to light. The first
almost complete Carcharodontosaurus discovered was being studied in
Germany but was destroyed by Allied bombing during WWII. A
recently unearthed specimen was reported to have the largest head of any
therapods known, larger than T-rex. Carcharodontosaurus
remains have been found in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and
Niger. This tooth was found in the "Taouz" region of
the Sahara desert in Morocco. This
specimen is EXTREMELY RARE and one of the finest teeth of this dinosaur
we have.
