LARGE MOSASAUR
TOOTH AND CRETOLAMNA SHARK TOOTH IN MATRIX - Khouribga, Morocco
CRETACEOUS
PERIOD: 65 million years ago
When we
began to prep this specimen from the phosphate mining region of
Khouribga, Morocco, we thought it was just going to be an exquisite
mosasaur tooth. As we lowered some matrix to better
expose the specimen, this amazing butterscotch enamel was
glimmering from a small region that became exposed. As we dug
deeper, imagine the delight to find a PERFECT fossil tooth of the
extinct prehistoric shark, Cretolamna
biauriculata maroccana. This shark is a member of the Mackeral
shark family. One of the characteristics of this shark are the
tiny second set of cusplets flanking the broad first set on each side of
the tooth. If and when these shark teeth are ever found, these
delicate tiny second cusplets are almost always damaged along with the
root being broken. This tooth was COMPLETELY buried in the matrix
when it was extracted from the mine hence the perfect
preservation!
Not to be
outdone by its partner, the giant Mosasaurus beaugei tooth is INTACT and
exhibits a glossy sheen as if just dropped from the creature's
jaw! The enamel is a rich transition of dark walnut brown to light
caramels and tapioca hues. You couldn't ask for a more perfect
condition group of fossil teeth from these killer marine
creatures! The teeth have been prepped
in very high relief so that both seem as though they are just resting on
the bottom of the prehistoric ocean floor. Matrix is original and
as found. This
fantastic fossil is a natural
double specimen. The mosasaur tooth
and shark tooth were found in this position and HAVE
NOT BEEN ARTIFICIALLY ATTACHED TO THE MATRIX.
The
Cretolamna shark tooth is IMMACULATE and must be seen to be
appreciated. A
RARE AND NATURAL DOUBLE OF TWO PREDATOR TEETH IN THE FINEST
PRESERVATION!
