SPINOSAURUS TOE CLAW - Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco

LATE CRETACEOUS PERIOD:  96 - 66 million years ago

This large Spinosaurus toe claw is truly a "show-stopper"!  The blood grooves are distinct on both sides and the entire claw is INTACT with NO restoration AND NO repair.  These are rare conditions of any dinosaur claw, especially in this size.  The claw exhibits some compression from the pressure of the sedimentary rock since first buried many millions of year ago.  Claw lacks the typical encrustation, extreme weathering and poor quality repair work that is usually encountered when such a rarity is available on the public  market.

In the first photograph, the magnitude of the size is apparent in comparison to the hand holding it.  This photo also shows two deep depressions on the underside (shown) of the claw  where extremely powerful tendons were attached to these areas of the claw.  The last photograph displays the anterior end of the claw.  Visible are the many pores in the core, a testament to its authenticity.  Reproductions cannot duplicate regions of deep, genuine porosity once occupied by blood vessels.

The most spectacular member of the uncommonly known family of Spinosauridae, Spinosaurus had an elaborate sail on its back.  Broad, skin-covered spines over 6 feet long projected upward from the backbone.  Two different purposes for these spines have been suggested.  The sail may have been used as a heat exchanger or it may have been a recognition feature for other Spinosaurus.

Spinosaurus was a giant, 50 feet long and weighed more than 4 tons.  The teeth of the Spinosaurus were also different from those of other carnosaurs (meat-eating lizards); they were straight rather than curved.  They had a crocodile-like lower jaw lined with medium sized teeth and probably ate smaller dinosaurs and other animals.

A Spinosaurus toe claw intact and of this size is an extreme rarity and sure to gain very rapidly in value over the years.  For the advanced collector, this is a highly recommended specimen.
