GIANT BROWN CRETACEOUS DINOSAUR-ERA AMMONITE - Agadir, Morocco
MID CRETACEOUS
PERIOD: 112 - 99.6 million years ago
This
rare giant brown ammonite is a
member of the Procheloniceras species Cretaceous ammonites from
the coastal village of Agadir, Morocco. It is a robust type and
is most often found in sizes ranging from a tea cup saucer to a
salad plate. Only very rarely are genuine specimens
found in this size class. This is an especially fine example that
is very rare due
to its natural brown limonite stain.
Also of unusually high preservation, much of the natural chamber detail
is retained. Only a few inches of the inner whorl necessitated
grinding to original detail as did a region where repaired. This
prize ammonite was found with a fracture across its face that required
repair which is common in these super-size specimens. It's
exceptional rarity more then compensates for any reduction in value due
to this repair. To add an extra element of display appeal,
there are two small ammonite fossils seen emerging from this large
ammonite's opening. This would have been the result of the large
ammonite dying, sinking to the bottom of the Cretaceous sea and then
after the creature inside has decomposed, the inner opening becomes
subsequently filled with smaller ammonites that too, succumb to death
and become preserved within the cavity. Color is VERY RARE and is
original due to a presence of brown limonite on the fossil's surface
compared to the typical white hue that is usually found. This monstrous and stunning specimen is even MUCH
nicer in person than the photos indicate.
Beware of completely carved
fakes that offer no trace of original chamber detail on the reverse side
as this is a problem in the market today. Ammonites that occur
this size naturally are RARE!
With
its three-dimensional form and texture, this ammonite specimen will
bring any event to a halt when displayed. It is in a class all its own,
not only desired by collectors, but treasured by interior designers and
architects alike for incorporating into a stunning display. Wonderfully
detailed. An exquisite specimen for such a rare size and an absolute
"show-stopper"! We highly
recommend this magnificent giant fossil to either augment a collection
or serve as a monumental interior design piece. The
pictures with the hand indicate the real magnitude of this enormous
specimen.
AMMONOIDS
evolved from nautiloids in the early Devonian period, about 400 million
years ago. They were abundant in world seas for the next 370 million
years. They suddenly vanished at the end of the Cretaceous period. These
extinct marine animals, which thrived in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic
Eras, some 400 to 65 million years ago, were cephalopods, and are thus
related to squid, octopus, cuttlefish, and the chambered nautilus.
Ammonites were able to swim, thanks to the unique construction of their
shell, which was divided into a series of air chambers. The air in the
chambers provided buoyancy for the animal to float; like modern
cephalopods, they probably moved through the water using jet propulsion.
Because ammonites lived exclusively in marine environments, their
presence also indicates the location of prehistoric seas.
The animal that lived
in this fossil shell looked something like a squid or an octopus, with
tentacles for grasping its food and moving around the ocean floor.
Some
ammonite species have been found up to 6 feet across in size, while
others never got bigger than a dime.
With its three-dimensional form and texture,
this ammonite specimen will bring any event to a halt when displayed.
It is in a class all its own, not only
desired by collectors, but treasured by interior designers and
architects alike for incorporating into a stunning display. Natural color and
wonderfully detailed. An exquisite specimen for such a rare size
and an absolute "show-stopper"!
