AMMONITE
(VASCOCERATID) ON
MATRIX - Taouz, Northern Sahara Desert, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 90 million years ago This
is an exceedingly RARE ammonite from the Turonian era of the late Cretaceous.
It's distinct characteristics set it apart from most other families of
ammonites. A member of the highly unusual family of ammonites
known as Vascoceratidaea, it possesses a nearly smooth outer surface
concealing its inner body chamber design and features a spherical
profile to its shell as opposed to a more stream-lined narrow body of
typical ammonites. Still intact are remnants of the original
carapace with a
large area of awesome color and striations in the hue. This is
extremely rare! The matrix base is ORIGINAL. The specimen
has had the matrix removed to expose the creature and the some of the
rock in which this fine specimen was found was left attached and
air-chiseled to form a wonderfully artful base which perfectly displays
the ammonite in an interesting pose. Even
if you don't care about fossils, this is such an incredibly visual
piece, it would be a remarkable accent to any decor. This type and
family
are
seldom seen and are a real rarity that would compliment any ammonite
collection. I've never had one like this and don't honestly know
if I ever will. If you're considering this specimen, act
fast. It's of a type I've never seen available.
