HARPOCERAS
AMMONITE ON VERY RARE FOSSILIZED WOOD
Schandelah (Braunschweig), Germany
EARLY
JURASSIC PERIOD (LIAS): 206 - 180 million years ago
This
massive and very thick slab gives us a rare glimpse into a day in the
life 200 million years ago from the
Early Jurassic seas that once covered what is now north-central
Germany. Doubly rare is the fact that a perfect impression of a
Harpoceras species ammonite can be found on a complete impression of a
large section of Jurassic wood. While this species of ammonite is
one of the dominant species of this site, the remains of wood are
not. We have seen slabs where prehistoric wood fragments
have been preserved amongst the layers in such a rare fashion that the
wood still floats!!!
This
specimen represents the very first time we have seen a COMPLETE and
UNDAMAGED impression of the ENTIRE piece of wood. This alone is
extremely rare and even without the ammonite impression, would be quite
an impressive fossil specimen. The extra special feature of this
super thick matrix fossil is the fact that a perfect and complete
impression of a Harpoceras rests over the impression of the wood.
Aesthetically speaking, there is no way this fossil can be improved
upon. The color of the differing layers is as beautiful as it is
interesting, showing the different periods and events that buried these
organisms. This
entire fossil and the impressions are completely intact and 100% genuine.
There is NO REPAIR,
RESTORATION and LARGE SLAB IS COMPLETE AND INTACT!
We have only stabilized the ammonite to preserve some of the intricate
detail of the delicate impression of the ammonite's centrum. Even
this feature is still intact! The varying tones in the wood
impression are completely natural as well and as found. The entire
fossilized region of this rock appear like an X-ray with a ghostly
appearance to the wood. The third to last image shows another
impression of an ammonite that was buried aside the wood. The fact
that the main ammonite is so well preserved is likely due to the bizarre
and rare instance of being wedged underneath this piece of wood with
they were buried. The detail to the wood is also
spectacular. Definitely this will be one of the most unique
ammonite fossils to grace any collection regardless of how advanced or
extensive it is!!! OUR
HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION FOR ITS UNCOMMON NATURE AND FEATURES!
These beautiful ancient marine invertebrates thrived
amongst large plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs whose remains are found in
the same region!
This rare
specimen was mined from a region that is now a protected WWII era
historic site. All collecting from this area is now forbidden and
has been for decades. Images of the site are shown below.
From a very old private collection and excavated prior to the site being
sealed off, this fossil represents one of the finest examples of marine
life from the Lias formation of Europe! INCREDIBLY
RARE AND
EXTREMELY UNIQUE - INFINITE AESTHETICS IN EVERY ASPECT!!!
